Arsenal fans will enter the new season filled with a genuine belief that the club can build on last season’s FA Cup success, Community Shield win and challenge for the title.
The summer captures of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, David Ospina and Calum Chambers means that the Gunners now boasts one of the strongest squads in the league.
Of the quartet it is perhaps the signing of Chilean star Sanchez that has sent out the clearest message that Arsenal mean business this season.
The former Barcelona moved to the Emirates on a £33 million pound deal and on the back of an impressive season at the Nou Camp that included 19 goals and 10 assists and a further two goals and one assist in the world cup.
Sanchez will join a squad that includes three members of Germany’s successful world cup in the shape of Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski.
Of the trio, the biggest pressure will be on Ozil. With a mixed fixed season behind him, the former Real Madrid player will be looking to add more consistency to the flashes of brilliance he showed the last time out.
Debuchy meanwhile is another shrewd signing with the French international a direct replacement and upgrade for the departed Bacary Sagna while the same can be said of Opsina with the Colombian stopper impressing at the World Cup.
While Chambers is seen as one for the future, the signing was another indication of the money available to Wenger as it took his spending for the summer over the £60 million mark and the club still looking to add a defensive midfielder that sum is set to increase.
Unlike summer of the past when transfer saga’s involving the likes of Luis Suarez, Cesc and Robin Van Persie have derailed the club this time round there is a real sense of calm and purpose about the club.
The capture of the FA cup will have instilled a belief and confidence in the camp that they can push on challenge for a title while the fact that signings have been made good and early will mean that the club are settled before the season starts.
While the likes of Ozil, Sanchez and Giroud will all be key men for the Gunners this time round, Aaron Ramsey has emerged as one of their most important players. The Welsh midfielder make a stunning start to the season last time out before injury derailed him but if he can stay fit then he could be the difference for Arsenal.
Given the outlay on new players Wenger and Co. will be expected to mount a serious and sustained challenge and while those above them last season, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool have also all strengthened if the Gunners can keep their stars fit and add a defensive midfielder then they could end their 11 year wait for a title.
