Arsenal chasing Borussia Dortmund defender
Arsenal’s commercial department will be licking their lips at the prospect of seeing the club’s latest target.
The Gunners are reportedly lining up an £11 million move for Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
Boss Arsene Wenger is on the lookout for a new central defender after selling Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona, a move that left young Callum Chambers as the only recognised cover for Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.
A number of top defenders have been linked with the club including Liverpool’s Daniel Agger and Olympiakos star Kostas Manolas however it would appear that Papastathopoulos is Wenger’s defender of choice.
The club have submitted a bid in excess of £10 million for the player although they may have to up their offer with the Express reporting that the Bundesliga side are holding out a sum closer to £20 million.
The Greek International started his career with AEK Athens in his homeland before moving to Serie A side Genoa.
Once again his form caught the eye and he secured a move to AC Milan, however he struggled to make an impression with injury hampering his progress and he eventually spent time on loan at Werder Bremen.
Last summer he joined Dortmund with Injuries to Neven Subotic and Mats Hummels ensuring plenty of game time last season as the 26 year old featured 28 times.
