Chelsea plot £40m move for Suarez after Arsenal bid fails
Sources close to SqueakyBumTime.com tell us Chelsea chairman Roman Abramovich will test Liverpool’s resolve not to sell Luis Suarez by making a £40million bid for the striker after London rivals were rebuffed following their £30million bid earlier this week.
Abramovich has grown frustrated after being out muscled by Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid in his pursuit of Edison Cavani from Napoli and failing to make on progress on prying Wayne Rooney from Manchester United and Hulk from Zenit St. Petersburg.
Suarez has expressed his desire to leave English football altogether but there has been no move made by his desired destination as Real Madrid await the development of Cavani’s situation before moving onto secondary targets.
The audacious bid from Arsenal prompted Suarez’s agent Pere Guardiola to hold meetings with Anfield bosses and manager Brendan Rodgers over the striker’s future but he did not issue a transfer request and is not agitating for a move as of yet.
Liverpool’s owners are keen to balance the books after a number of high profile signings and would listen to offers of around £50million for Suarez but they and the player would rather a move abroad.
Abramovich has already showed he will back returning manager Jose Mourinho in his pursuit of a top quality striker but has so far run into dead ends in the pursuit of Radamel Falcao, Cavani, Hulk and Rooney meaning his remaining options are limited.
The 26 year old Suarez has three years left on his contract and the Merseysiders are hopeful of retaining his services next year, especially after failing to bring in Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Shakhtar Donetsk who was touted as their number one target this window.
Two and half years ago Liverpool lost their then talisman striker Fernando Torres after a £50million splurge from Stamford Bridge and it would need to be a figure around that again were they to sell Suarez to a rival English side.
Suarez has bemoaned his treatment by the English press so only a significant boost in wages is likely to see him join the Europa League champions especially since his last major controversy came after he bit Blues defender Branislav Ivanovic on the arm, though it has been reported that Mourinho will let the Serbian leave the club for the right offer.
