Anzhi eye Ba as Chelsea look for new striker
Demba Ba could join Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala as Jose Mourinho has sanctioned the sale of either the Senegalese striker or Fernando Torres as the club prepare to bring a big name striker in.
Mourinho and owner Roman Abramovich have agreed to pull out all the stops to bring Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney to the club meaning they would move on Ba or Torres and keep romelu Lukaku as their third-choice centre forward.
The club don’t feel that any moves need to be made in regards to securing a club for Torres but have began looking at options to move Ba on.
So far the striker who joined from Newcastle United only six months ago has turned down a return to West Ham and a move to West Bromwich Albion, where Nicolas Anelka just signed a one year deal.
Ba scored six goals in his 22 games for Chelsea but looks increasingly like a spare part in Mourinho’s vision for the squad as the arrival of Andre Schurrle from Bayer Leverkusen and pursuit of top level striker Edison Cavani, Robert Lewandowski and Rooney show a desire for Europe’s elite.
Mourinho has already moved on Marko Marin in a loan deal with Sevilla and looks set to send John Obi Mikel to Galatasaray as the player and club are in late stage negotiations.
Anzhi have already taken Christopher Samba back to the club after a high profile flop spell at Queens Park Rangers this season and manager Guss Hiddink is now looking for a striker to partner with former Barcelona and Inter Milan ace Samuel Eto’o in the Russian side’s attack.
At Chelsea, Mourinho and Abramovich have agreed that only Marin, Mikel and one of Torres or Ba will be allowed to leave the club this window, ending any possibility of Juan Mata or David Luiz being used as makeweight in deals for a striker or as being subject to the right bid.
Mata was reported to be available for transfer earlier in the window and Luiz has been linked with a big money switch to Paris saint-Germain to link up with compatriot Thiago Silva in their centre-back line but Chelsea have made clear that neither player will be allowed to leave the club this summer.
Chelsea yesterday signed Mark Schwarzer on a one year deal as back up to Petr Cech after the 40 year old goalkeeper was released by Fulham at the end of last season.
