The Red Devils, under the care of experienced manager Louis Van Gaal, won five and drew one of their 6 pre-season games claiming the International Cup along the way. Key to that revival has been the confidence instilled in a squad that is largely the same as the one David Moyes left at the end of the season.
Van Gaal has taken stock of the players at his disposal and introduced a new 3-5-2 system, designed to bring the best out of Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and a defence weakened by the departure of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
With such experience gone it will be left to Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Johnny Evans to ensure that David de Gea builds on the fine form he showed last season. The Spanish star was United’s best player last time out and has emerged as a key man for the club in recent seasons.
Summer arrival Ander Herrera will make his competitive debut for the club. The all action midfielder has impressed since joining the club and he could form a strong partnership with newly appointed vice-captain Darren Fletcher.
Another summer signing Luke Shaw is set to miss out as he is sidelined for a month with a hamstring injury while up front Javier Herandez and Danny Welbeck, both linked with moves away, are vying for a spot alongside Captain Rooney with Robin Van Persie set to be rested as he continues his comeback following an extended post world cup break.
Swansea meanwhile will be out to gate-crash the LVG love in. The Welsh outfit have made some strong acquisitions this summer after a mixed campaign last time out. The most high profile of them is forward Batefemi Gomis, set to start up front alongside Wilfried Bony.
Manager Gary Monk, entering his first full-season as Jacks manager, has been shrewd in the market this summer. In addition to the free capture of Gomis, Monk has also added Lukasz Fabianski, Gylfi Sigurdsson and exciting winger Jefferson Montero to his squad with Michu, so injury prone last season, Michel Vorm and Ben Davies the most high profile departures.
Last season United got off to a great start when they beat Swansea 4-1 away and they followed up that result with a 2-1 success at home. A similar result on Saturday would be most pleasing to LVG.
