Nadal beat local favourite Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 in the second round, the second time he had disposed of an Australian following his victory over Bernard Tomic in the first round.

After his first round clash with Tomic was abandoned when the Australian was forced to withdraw after the first set through injury Nadal made light work of the 17 year old Kokkinakis.

Despite the apparent comfort of the win, Nadal was full of praise for the world number 570

He has a fantastic potential with a great serve and a great forehand,” Nadal said.

“He really has all the ingredients to be a great player.

“He has the right level to try to be in the tour very soon. So just keep working and that will happen.

“There is now new generation that should come.

Kokkinakis is one of these ones that can be there in the next couple of years.

“That’s my feeling. He has everything to do it.”

Next up for Nadal is Monfils, the 27 year old ranked 32 in the world. At 6ft 4” the four time tour winner will offer a big serve. He hit 13 aces in his second round win over American Jack Sock.

Monfils followed up his straight sets first round win over Ryan Harrison with another accomplished performance as he beat Sock 7-6(2), 7-5, 6-2 in a little over two hours

The pair have met 11 times with Nadal winning 9 of them to Monfils 2. There most recent meeting came in the final of the Qatar Open final earlier this month when Nadal won 6-1, 6-7, 6-2.

The last time Monfil tasted success against the world number 1 was in 2012 when he beat Nadal in the semi-final in Doha.

Given Monfil’s pedigree and his ability to make life difficult for Nadal this has the potential to be a banana skin for the Spanish star although given his form to date he should progress.
