Wenger refuses to go above £40m for Suarez
Despite being linked with a host of top strikers over the summer, Arsene Wenger has struggled to make headway in bringing a big name to The Emirates Stadium.
After losing out on Gonzalo Higuain and losing interest in Wayne Rooney, Wenger has set his sights on landing Luis Suarez despite Liverpool’s best efforts to keep him at Anfield.
The Red’s £40m valuation of the Uruguayan was even met in a bid by Arsenal but as rejected nonchalantly by senior figures at Anfield.
But now Arsene Wenger has fired back at Liverpool by saying that he won’t pay anything over £40m for Suarez and will drag the saga out all summer long if need be.
With plenty of cash in reserve, Arsenal are keen to land Suarez who is becoming more and more discontent at Liverpool as he looks to pursue regular European football and the chance to win trophies.
So much so, that Suarez has alerted clubs to a £40m release clause which is tied into his contract at Liverpool despite the club rejecting a bid worth that of Arsenal.
Liverpool officials have denied that the clause lets a player leave stating that it only requires the Uruguayan that a bid has been made for his services instead.
As Arsenal are one of Liverpool’s biggest rivals for the European spots, it could mean that Suarez may only leave the club should a foreign side place a bid which satisfies Liverpool’s valuations.
If this is true, then Real Madrid could well become favourites to sign the player instead after reports emerged of them showing an interest in the striker.
Suarez hasn’t hid his desire to play for a team such as Madrid who certainly have a vacancy in their squad in the attacking department following the departure of Higuain.
But Madrid have distanced themselves from making a bid for Suarez and maintain that they aren’t looking to sign the player anytime soon.
Suarez’s controversial past and colourful nature has certainly earned him a degree of notoriety which could well have a lasting effect on whether a giant name such as Real would want to bring him into La Liga.
Even if they don’t, Suarez knows that Arsenal will be doing their very best to sign him even if they are locked in to a battle with Liverpool which could take weeks before any resolution is found.
