Manchester United beat Liverpool to Blackburn ace
It is being reported this morning that Manchester United are all set to complete a deal to sign Blackburn defender Phil Jones, beating off competition from Liverpool in the process.
The 19-year-old had been heavily linked with a move to Anfield in recent weeks, but Sir Alex Ferguson appears to have swooped in for the player at the last minute and secured a deal worth around £16m.
Jones – who is part of the England’s European Under-21 Championship squad this summer – is now undergoing medical tests at Old Trafford in order to complete the deal before he flies to Denmark.
Ferguson is reportedly delighted to have beaten Liverpool to the player he sees as Rio Ferdinand’s long-term successor. There was also interest from Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham for the youngster, so he is extremely highly-rated.
This is despite only making his Premier League debut in March 2010. He has since gone on to make 34 appearances for the club, making a name for himself as one of the best young defenders in the country in the process.
It seems as though Ferguson was always confident of landing Jones too. The Red Devils boss believed that the prospect of moving to Old Trafford was always going to win him over.
This has been proved correct after Jones made it clear he would rather join the Premier League Champions than the Liverpool revolution under Kenny Dalglish.
Blackburn will be pleased with their hand in this deal too. Of course they will be frustrated to lose one of their most consistent performers, but with a new five-year deal signed earlier this year with a release clause, they have at least got decent money.
As for Manchester United, they will look to get this deal tied up quickly before focusing on their next transfer target. This could be Aston Villa’s Ashley Young, Atletico Madrid keeper David De Gea or Udinese’s much talked about Alexis Sanchez.
