Modric’s future at White Hart Lane is uncertain following Harry Redknapp’s departure last week and Spurs’ failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
It’s now being reported that Madrid boss Jose Mourinho is plotting a bid to tempt the the Croatian international into swapping North London for the Spanish capital with a vier to pairing him with Xabi Alonso in midfield.
The 26-year-old was the subject of a summer long pursuit by Tottenham last year with chairman Daniel Levy resisting the overtures of their Premier League rivals whilst Manchester United also hold a long-standing interest.
However missing out on a seat at Europe’s elite table means Levy may find it difficult to turn down any offers even if they don’t meet the £35 million asking price.
International teammate Mate Bilic claims that Modric is close to completing a move to the Bernabeu and that he desperate to play in La Liga.
Sporting Gijon striker: “I’m very good friends with Modric. He wants to play in the Spanish league. He loves the Premier League but he wants to play in Spain. He’s very close to agreeing a move.”
And ex-Croatia and Madrid striker Davor Sukur believes the playmaker has what it takes to become a galactio whilst also revealing that Manchester City are interested in his services.
“Luka Modric is a player who could play for Real Madrid. He needs to be playing for a team that will win trophies. He’d be perfect for them.
“I would recommend that Florentino Perez signs him. If he doesn’t sign for Real Madrid, he’ll end up at Manchester City or Chelsea. He has to leave Tottenham to win trophies.”
