Despite leading the club to league cup success last season and the knock out stages of the Europa League this year the Dane has paid the price for constant speculation on his role not to mention a poor run of league form that has seen just one league win in 11 games.
The club acted swiftly appointing 34 year old Garry Monk as the new man. The long serving defender faces a tough task as the club are just 2 points and six place above the relegation zone
Monk not only faces the inevitable task of guiding the club to safety but also the transition from player to manager.
Just last month Monk clashed with team-mate Chico with the Spanish defender allegedly picked up a brick during a furious row, leading to police being called.
The matter appears to be in the past now however with Monk confirming the pair had made up, telling reporters in the pre-match build up “Chico will be in the squad – yes. Zero problems whatsoever. We have had a fantastic relationship and we’ve had a laugh about what’s going on.”
The 34 year old also revealed that Chico and the club’s other defender won’t have to worry about him being a rival for a starting berth adding “I’m not a player manager. You can’t prepare a team properly if you are in it. It would be nice if I have played my last game because that will mean I have done well as a manager.”
Monk will be without injured trio Michu (ankle), Jose Canas (ankle) and Michel Vorm (knee) while Jonjo Shelvey is a doubt. Marvin Emnes, a deadline day signing from Middlesbrough, goes straight into the squad.
Cardiff meanwhile currently sit in the Premier League relegation zone, two points adrift of safety but will head into the game buoyed by their win over Norwich last weekend.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will assess the fitness of Mark Hudson after a recent hamstring injury however Andrew Taylor is side-lined by a calf problem.
