Arsenal closing in on deal for Bayern star Gustavo

Arsenal’s patience in the transfer market looks set to be finally rewarded with reports claiming the Gunners are closing in on Bayern Munich star Luiz Gustavo.

Arsene Wenger’s has been frustrated in his attempts to bring in big names this summer and despite the cash-rich Londoners new found desire to splash the cash moves for Liverpool star Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney and Gonzalo Higuain have all failed to materialise.

The French manager has so far only managed to bring in Yaya Sanogo, a French U21 International on a free transfer but if reports are to believed that could be about to change this week.

According to the Sunday Mirror, Arsenal are ready to pay £14 million to bring the Brazilian to the Emirates.

The defensive midfielder was left out of the Bayern Munich squad for their 3-1 win over Borussia Monchengladbach on the opening day of the new Bundesliga season.

Despite helping the Bavarian giants to the treble last season the former Hoffenheim star was not a regular starter making 35 appearances in all competitions, 15 of which were from the bench.

The 26 year old, a Confederations Cup winners with Brazil earlier this summer, fuelled talk of a move, saying “It’s as you say” when asked if there was interest in him from Arsenal.

However Wenger, speaking after his side’s final pre-season game, an impressive 3-1 win over last season’s runners up Manchester City in Helsinki, refused to confirm that a deal was close saying “There is nothing concrete yet”

The 63 year old did admit however that he needs to strengthen his side before the start of the new season.

“We hope to play 55 games this season. We are a little bit thin squad-wise,” Wenger said. “But I am an optimist. This is the first time for many years that we have kept all our important players at the club.”

Wenger also hinted that he had not given up on bringing Luis Suarez to London adding “If I listen to everyone else, he [Suarez] is not available,” Wenger added. “But we’ll see. We will do things in the right way.”

The Gunners, who face Fenerbahce in the qualifying round for the Champions league, are believed to be ready to up their offer to £45 million although given Liverpool’s very public stance that they will not do business with a rival a move at this point seems very unlikely.
