Arsenal look set to break their transfer window duck in style with the imminent capture of Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil although it will take a big effort from Arsene Wenger to land the German star.
The Gunners have been frustrated in their attempts to bring in a big name player this summer having seen moves for Gonzalo Higuain, Luis Suarez and Luiz Gustavo fail to materialise. Despite having money to spend, Wenger has so far only managed to add free agents Matthieu Flamini and Yaya Sanogo to their squad.
However speaking after Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Spurs Wenger revealed that the club could make a late surprise signing, telling reporters “It is a little bit like a domino game. Maybe something will happen in the last 24 hours, maybe not. It is very difficult to predict, but maybe we can surprise you.”
And now it looks like that signing could be Ozil, with the club agreeing a fee, believed to be around £42.5 million with Real Madrid for the transfer of Ozil. The player however is said to be having a medial in Germany ahead of the move.
The 24-year-old joined Real in 2010 from Werder Bremen for 15m euros and in his three seasons at the Bernebeu has created an incredible 47 goals, a feat not bettered and matched only by Lionel Messi.
Ozil is set to be replaced at Real by Gareth Bale following the wingers unveiling this morning and the arrival of the world’s most expensive football in Madrid looks set to have a trickle-down effect on European football.
Following reports of Arsenal’s bid rumours began to circulate that Manchester United were readying a last-ditch attempt to hijack the move however those reports have now been rubbished by the club. Of more concern however is the reported interest of PSG who have allegedly entered the running however Wenger will be hopeful he can see of the challenge of the French side and bring in his the first major star of what is promising to be an exciting day at the Emirates.
Wenger is also believed to be chasing deals for Ozil’s team-mates at Real Madrid Angel Di Maria and Karim Benzema while Chelsea striker Demba Ba and Palermo goalkeeper Emilliano Viviano are also being linked with move to London.
