The Serbian followed up with his first round win over Lukas Lacko with a comprehensive straights set, 6-0, 6-4, 6-4, win over Leonardo Mayer.
With the heat very intense in Melbourne, breaking 40 degree’s each day so far this week, Djokovic was keen to seal the win as quick as possible and he secured the first set in just 22 minutes. Mayer fought in the last two sets to make life a little more difficult but in the end he was unable to match the power and movement of the world number 2.
“You don’t want to spend too much time in the heat,” Djokovic said.
“You want to try to win as quick as possible. He started to play better as the match progressed, in the second part, especially in the third set. But I felt like I was serving well and I was in control.
When I needed to use my opportunities when they were presented, I did so. It was a better performance than the first round.”
The win was Djokovic’s 23rd successive win with his last defeat coming in the US open final and he will be confident of a 24th when he takes on world number 49 Istomin.
The Uzbekistani sealed his place in the third round when he knocked out 30th-seed Dmitry Tursunov with a 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 score line after previously impressing in his win over former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis in the first round.
The pair have met on three separate occasions, including a meeting in Melbourne at the 2010 Australian Open, with Djokovic winning all three, although their meeting at the Rogers Cup in 2013 was a closely fought contest with Istomin claiming the first set 6-2.
Istomin will need to maintain the form he has shown to date if he is to stand any chance of troubling one the game’s most in-form players.
