Both sides will be keen to leave their mark and grab early season bragging rights however as Manchester United can testify last season winning the trophy is not necessarily a barometer for gauging title chances as since 2000 the team that has won the Charity shield has gone onto the win the Premier league just 5 times.

Manchester City have raided Arsenal on a number of occasions in recent years with the likes of Kolo Toure and Samir Nasri swapping London for Manchester.

This summer it was the turn of Bacary Sagna to make the change from red to blue. The French defender could make his competitive debut for City against his former team-mates, adding additional spice to proceedings.

Given City’s unusually quite summer, the competitive debut’s will be low with Fernando Reges the only other likely start with fellow signings Willy Cabellero and Frank Lampard more than likely set to start on the bench.

Arsenal meanwhile should had a start to their big summer recruit, Alexis Sanchez with Yaya Sanogo and Joel Campbell likely to start up front as Oliver Giroud is eased back into action following his world cup exploits.

World Cup winners Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski will expect to feature as the Gunners finalise their preparations for the season opener with Crystal Palace.

With the clubs trophy drought now over following last season’s FA Cup success and the outlay on summer signings, Arsenal fans will be expecting a serious title challenge this season and while the Charity shield ranks fourth in the domestic trophy table, beating City would lay down a big market for the coming season.

While City are relative newcomers to Community shield action, with Sunday’s game just their 9th appearance and third since 2011, Arsenal are old hands in the competition with 12 wins and 7 defeats.

The community shield was first held in 1908 when Manchester United, the competitions most successful team, drew 1-1 with QPR before winning the replay 4-0. It is a recognised Super cup competition with the funds raised from the game distributed to charities around England.
