Premier League duo and Monaco chasing Atletico star

Southampton hope to deal Arsenal a blow by snapping up Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgian International only moved to the Spanish capital last summer but is being linked with a move away and his final destination could be St Mary’s.

Saints boss Ronald Koeman knows Alderweireld from his days in Holland and is keen on sealing a loan deal for the player.

The 25 year old played 22 times for Atletico, helping them to a first title in 16 years and the final of the Champions league, however he is keen to move on as he now guaranteed a regular first team spot and feels his career will stagnate in La Liga.

Southampton could offer a short term solution for Alderweireld with the player a like for like replacement for the departed Dejan Lovren.

However sealing the deal will not be easy with Arsenal keen to bring the player to London to add physicality to the Gunners back line. Arsene Wenger sold Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona earlier this month and wants to add another central defender to his rank.

Like Vermaelen, Alderweireld is versatile and he can also play at right back meaning that he could provide addition cover for Matheiu Debuchy.

A Dutch league winner with Ajax, Alderweireld has plenty of options on the table as the transfer window draws to a close with Ligue 1 side Monaco also keen on his services.
