The Arsenal manager fears that the young English defender may have hit the wall after being forced with too much responsibility
The teenager joined The Gunners from Southampton this summer and already during his fledgling Arsenal career, Chambers has carried a lot of burden that is pretty rare to be given to someone so young.
And, Wenger feels that too much responsibility so early in his career has hurt Chambers. The youngster has been playing as center back and a right back since the beginning of the campaign and Wenger says that Chambers could need a rest in order to refresh and refocus.
While talking to reporters, the French tactician stated that Chambers has played way too many games and really needs a proper breather because every single game is too much for such a young player.
“For a 19-year-old player, he has played too many games,” Wenger said. “They all hit the wall after 15, 17 games. You have to give them a breather, refresh and get them back again. At the moment, to have that responsibility in every single game is a lot on a player of that age.”
And although Chambers has been versatile enough to hold down a place in the starting XI, a player of such a young age should not be asked to do so much especially when he is surrounded by more experienced men.
