Wenger promised an ‘exceptional’ signing, but looks unlikely

Arsene Wenger’s hopes of making a dramatic late signing are fading fast with Arsenal anticipating a quiet final day of the transfer window, reports near Emirates claim.

Wenger has insisted over the summer that he will only sign an “exceptional” player to further improve his squad and has been in the market for a central midfielder and a striker.

Speculation linking the Gunners with moves for Paris Saint-Germain duo Edinson Cavani and Adrien Rabiot intensified when Wenger was pictured in the French capital on Monday.

Links to Rabiot and Cavani emerged after the Gunners conceded defeat in their attempts to sign top summer target Karim Benzema from Real Madrid.

Arsenal have only signed goalkeeper Petr Cech from Chelsea in a £10 million deal to improve their squad as they target a title challenge this season.

The north London club have more than £70m available to spend on new signings but are unlikely to add any players on deadline day.
