Newcastle are eighteenth in the league and run the risk of becoming trapped deeper in the drop zone should Saturday’s match end in an Arsenal victory, as everyone is expecting.

Wenger’s men will be hoping that their crushing 4-0 loss to Southampton was merely a blip. However, the result showed Arsenal’s fragility – something Newcastle will be looking to exploit.

What makes Arsenal’s rise to the top of the Premier League especially impressive is the wide range of injuries they have had to contend with.

The Gunners could be boosted by the potential return of Flamini following a recent ankle problem. Alexis Sanchez is set to remain out of the side, as are other long-term injury absentees, including Jack Wilshire, Santi Cazorla and others.

Arsenal showed good spirit and team morale to bounce back from the Southampton result against Bournemouth and they will be hoping to start the new year with a bang by making it two home wins in a row.

Wenger will be hoping to get some separation from phenoms Leicester City and anything other than three points against Newcastle will be seen as totally unacceptable.

Despite Newcastle’s lowly league position, they have actually managed to show signs of promise during December. The Magpies put up victories against Tottenham and Liverpool but then faded and managed to lose against West Brom and Everton in consecutive matches.

Very few people will be expecting Newcastle to come up with any kind of a result but there is always a glimmer of hope provided by their track record of upset wins, such as those mentioned.

The visitors are set to be without Vernon Anita who has a hamstring problem, while keeper Rob Elliot is touch and go due to suffering a stomach complaint.

Arsenal are heavily favoured to pull off the victory and few would dispute the likelihood of that outcome.

However, Newcastle have managed some scalps so far this season, and Arsenal would certainly be the biggest yet. Even a draw would be seen as a major result for the away side.

However, it seems doubtful they have it in them, and the more likely result is an Arsenal victory causing Newcastle to become buried deep in the relegation zone for the foreseeable future.
