In one of the most surprising transfer stories of the summer so far, Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Tottenham Striker Jermaine Defoe.
The Gunners have made no secret of their desire to sign a new striker this summer, with Nicklas Bendtner expected to leave the club this summer.
After another season without trophies, they could do with someone to score goals consistently alongside Robin Van Persie as they look to challenge for all major honours.
A ‘fox in the box’ type player is one they have craved for a while now too, so perhaps Defoe – who was far from heavily involved for Tottenham last season – fits the bill perfectly.
The England international only started 16 games in the most recent campaign and some reports suggest that Tottenham are willing to listen to offers for him, especially as they look to raise funds for a new striker or two.
The biggest doubt in this deal though is whether Tottenham would be willing to sell to their local rivals. Harry Redknapp knows what Defoe can do on his day, so would he really want to sell to Arsenal?
Wenger’s men are not only local rivals, but competitiors for a place in the Champions League. If Redknapp does sell Defoe, he would surely rather it was to another club.
Then there is the question of whether Wenger would be prepared to spend big money. Defoe was signed for £15.75m by Spurs two years ago and still has two and a half years left on his contract.
This is definitely a situation worth watching and one which could stretch across the summer.
It makes sense from Arsenal’s point of view if they can avoid breaking the bank, but less so for Spurs who would be reluctant to sell a proven goalscorer to their rivals.
