Arsenal boss admits interest in Lyon midfielder

Arsene Wenger has revealed that he is tracking Lyon attacking-midfielder Clement Grenier.

Grenier was almost sold by the French club last summer, however the 22-year-old took full advantage of his opportunity when team-mate Yoann Gourcuff was injured, leading Europe’s elite clubs to become alert to his talents.

The Gunners’ boss has even compared the player to one of his own former players, Samir Nasri, which he admits attracts him to the player.

Wenger told Telefoot : “We are following him, I like the intelligence of his play.”

He continued, “He has interesting qualities, if anyone, he reminds me of Nasri,” Arsenal boss.

The France Under-21 star has also been compared to former Lyon legend Juninho, by Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas, as he named him “Juninho’s little brother” due to his impressive dead ball skills.

Wenger is fully aware that he must improve his team as they only just managed to finish in the top 4 this season, and has already began business, in which is set to be a busy summer for the Arsenal manager.

Arsenal are set to announce the signing of youngster Yaya Sanogo in the next few days after he agreed personal terms.

Grenier played 27 games in Ligue 1 last season, contributing with 6 goals and 5 assists and Wenger believes that the player is very similar to Nasri due to his attributes he displayed whilst playing in the deep-lying playmaker role this season for Lyon.

Rumours are suggesting that Wenger may attempt to make a double swoop from Lyon as he is also following Maxime Gonalons, as Bayern Munich & in particular Pep Guardiola show some interest in Jack Wilshire.

It is believed that the Arsenal boss will make a bid for around £20million for the two players as he looks to strengthen the centre of his midfield with both a defensive style player (Gonalons) and an attacking minded player (Grenier).

The Lyon captain is under contract until 2016, however they have announced they will consider bids from around £15million for the 24-year-old because of their current financial struggles.

Arsenal were tracking West Ham midfielder Mohammed Diame to fill the gap in the holding midfield position, however Wenger has decided against making a move for the Senegal International.

Meanwhile it has also been speculated that current Arsenal player Gervinho will be offered a chance away from the Emirates, as Lyon are tracking the player on a one-year loan deal with a view to make the deal permanent.

Arsenal’s board have supplied Wenger with a whopping £70million transfer kitty as they have announced that they intend to bring in some big names to the club this summer in order to make a real title challenge next season.

Arsenal are also searching for a new striker to bring to the club, and are reportedly tracking Wayne Rooney’s situation at Manchester United, whilst Steven Jovetic is also a target.

Reports are also suggesting that Swansea defender Ashley Williams is close to a move to Arsenal as they plan to let current captain Thomas Vermaelen leave for £5million in a possible swap deal with the Welsh club.
