Arsene Wenger is lining up a surprise move for Chelsea striker Fernando Torres.
The 29 year is currently on International Duty with the Spanish National side at the Confederations Cup in Brazil but he will head back to the UK after today’s final with his future very much up for discussion.
The former Liverpool striker has failed to light up Stamford Bridge since a £50 million in January 2010 with Carlo Ancelotti, Roberto di Matteo and Rafa Benitez all failing to get the best out of the striker.
Rumours are abound of a summer departure with Napoli and a reunion with Rafa Benitez, the man who turned him into a world class striker, believed to be on the cards.
However Arsenal are monitoring the situation and could move for the striker despite their interest in Gonzalo Higuain.
Arsene Wenger is keen to spend money this summer and is looking for a world class striker to bolster his title ambitions. The cash rich Gunners have money to spend and have lined up a number of marquee signings.
Higuain is believed to be close to a £25 million move to the Emirates with a deal expected to be announced in the coming days and the Real Madrid man could be joined by Torres.
After a difficult 18 months in London Torres showed an upturn in form last season scoring 23 goals in all competitions although he only managed 8 in the Premier League.
That has led to talk that Mourinho is looking to offload Torres with a number of high profile strikers lined up to fill the void. Despite his massive price tag in 2010, the Torres of 2013 could be available for as little as £20 million, a sum that would not pose too many problems for Arsenal.
The Gunners also have Wayne Rooney in their sights. The 27 year old Manchester United’s future is up for discussion at the moment amid talk of a summer move with Chelsea and PSG also keeping an eye on developments. Wenger is believed to have offered £20 million for Rooney but United have said that the England striker is not for sale.
