It’s proving to be a difficult summer thus far for Manchester United manager David Moyes.
While the newly installed former Everton boss has made great strides completing his backroom staff, has looked assured in his press conferences and re-affirmed the club’s stance that Wayne Rooney is not available he has struggled to capture his main transfer targets, to date.
Deals for top targets Thiago Alcantara and Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay slow to materialise while other sides are now being linked with other long terms targets.
Earlier this morning it was reported that Spurs were moving in on PSV midfielder Kevin Strootman while new reports are now linking Arsenal with a move for a player United have been tracking for a while, Inter Milan defender Andrea Ranocchia.
The 25 year old made 39 appearances in all competitions for Inter last season and was one of the shining lights in an Inter team that finished 9th in Serie A. The former Genoa star began his career Arezzo before moving to the Liguria coast in 2008. He enjoyed a loan spell with Bari before his form attracted the interest of Inter, whom he joined in a €12.5 million deal in 2011.
Ranocchia has been capped by Italy on 10 occasions however his last appearance in a blue jersey came in the 4-0 friendly win over San Marino back in May with the player failing to make the Italian Confederation cup squad.
The defender is highly rated in Italy and his form has not gone unnoticed with Juventus and Napoli Now it seems Arsenal are ready to join the Italian sides in the hunt for the Italian International.
Both sides are on the hunt for defensive cover with William Gallas’s departure from White Hart Lane leaving a gap in the centre of the Spurs defence while doubts over the future of Thomas Vermaelen has prompted Arsene Wenger to look at alternatives.
Despite the interest, Inter President Massimo Moratti is adamant however that Ranocchia will be with Inter next season, telling Italian reporters “The defence is where we really need to strengthen. Ranocchia is one of the best in the country in that position, and he plays for the national team,”
However with all interested parties able to offer European football next season Ranocchia may well decide to move on.
