Villa looking to gamble on Lyon’s £7m-rated Gomis

With Aston Villa set to lose several top quality strikers such as Christian Benteke and Darren Bent over the next few weeks, the club have been frantically searching to find someone new to lead the line at Villa Park.

Bt Paul Lambert hasn’t had to spend long on searching for a replacement with The Villans eyeing up a bid for Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis.

The Frenchman had an impressive season for Lyon last year and has been labelled as a similar type of player as Didier Drogba.

With that in mind, Aston Villa are considering spending a fair bit on Gomis and are preparing a £7m bid for the striker to try and prize him away from the Stade Gerland.

To show that they mean business, it’s thought that the club are also ready to offer the striker £50,000 a week which would make him one of the higher earners at Villa Park.

It’s not hard to see why Randy Lerner and Paul Lambert would be desperate to splash the cash for Gomis who netted 16 league goals for Lyon last season in 34 games.

Alongside that, Gomis has been a consistent performer in Ligue 1 having managed to achieve a double figure goal tally 7 years running whilst playing for both Lyon and Saint Etienne.

Gomis has also been a member of the French squad in the past where he has notched up 10 appearances and 3 goals in the past 5 years including scoring a brace against Ecuador in his debut in 2008.

But despite the good form, Lyon are thinking of selling Gomis who only has a year left of his current contract which makes it an ideal time to cash in on the player before he could leave for the free next June.

This means that Villa are certainly facing a lot of competition for the striker with several other Premier League sides such as Newcastle and Cardiff all showing interest in the player.

Furthermore, Gomis is looking to play Champions League football this season meaning that the player could opt to move to the likes of Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk who have already qualified for the group stages of this year’s competition.

This could prove a stumbling block for Villa meaning that the club are really going to have come up with a lucrative offer if they stand any chance of bringing in Gomis to replace the ready to depart Benteke.
