Ahead of their return to competitive action Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has conceded that a title charge is unlikely at this point with Champions league qualification the aim for the second half of the season.
Dortmund have slipped to fourth in the standings after a three game winless run before the winter break, a streak that included back to back home defeats to Bayer Leverkusen and Hertha Berlin and Klopp wants to get back on track starting against Augsburg.
“The initial premise for the second half of the season is that we are fourth, trailing by many points behind Bayern Munich who also have a game in hand,” he said.
“Bayern Munich isn’t our aim for the moment. We are focusing on Augsburg, and then we want to pass in front of the teams that are ahead of us.
“That should be possible. It’s not a certainty but it should be possible. And our fighting spirit is definitely awake to achieve this.”
The club will be no doubt buoyed by the fact they won four friendly games during the break but none of that will matter, according to Klopp, if they slip up again.
“The question of whether our preparation went well can only fully be answered on Saturday which will also depend on our opponent.
“Everything that we have been able to assess, like many of you have witnessed, has been assessed.
“The boys have trained extensively with very few free days because we felt like we wanted to use as much of the time as possible and it was necessary”
Dortmund, who have struggled with injuries this season, look set to welcome back Mats Hummels in the not too distant future with the German star set to return in next weekend’s encounter with Eintracht Braunschweig. The defender has resumed training but won’t feature on Saturday.
Ilkay Gundogan, who have missed five months of the season, is also edging closer to a return but again this weekend is likely to have come too soon.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a hat-trick when the two sides met earlier in the season but Augsburg have improved considerably since then, suffering just one defeat in their last 8 games to sit 8th in the table.
Ji Dong-Won is set to play for Augsburg after his move form Sunderland. In one of football’s more curious transfers, the South Korean star signed for Augsburg on a short-term deal for an undisclosed fee on January 16, before being unveiled as a close-season recruit for Borussia Dortmund just a day later.
Dong-Won is set to get an early opportunity to impress both his new employers on Saturday as he prepares for his debut.
