Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is lining up a stunning treble swoop as he aims to turn his team into Champions League challengers.
Rodgers is hoping to clinch a double deal for Ajax pair Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld with Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand emerging as a solution to Liverpool’s left-back problems.
Eriksen has long been on the Red’s radar and has been linked with a move to Anfield since emerging on the scene two years ago. The 21 year old attacking midfielder is entering the final year of his contract and is rated in the £15 million bracket.
Liverpool have switched their sights back to the Danish International after missing out on reported top target Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the Armenian International who snubbed a move to Anfield in favour of joining Borussia Dortmund.
Dortmund were keeping tabs on Eriksen but with Mkhitaryan now signed up their interest has waned leaving Liverpool in a straight fight with Italian side Roma for the players signature.
Like Roma, Liverpool are also unable to offer European Football next season, yet despite the absence of midweek action Eriksen is still believed to be keen on a move to England.
Ajax coach Frank de Boer has encouraged Liverpool’s interest in the playmaker saying: “I would want nothing more than having Christian with us for a few more years.
“But we realise that the interest in this kind of player is huge. And I can also understand that he wants to make another step in his career. I can’t stop him.”
“If ¬Liverpool go back to really good possession play, it can be a success for Christian. But it does mean that their entire way of playing has to change. It is up to Christian what he wants. If he feels good going to ¬Liverpool anyway, then it is up to him.”
Alderweireld meanwhile is highly rated in European circles but like Eriksen the 24 year old is entering the final year of his current deal and has turned down the opportunity to extend it.
The centre-back is also interesting Norwich, who have agreed a £7 million fee with Ajax, but the player is keeping his option open amid the Liverpool interest.
While the interest in Eriksen and Alderweireld has long been reported in the press, the link with Bertrand comes as a surprise.
The young defender is highly rated at Stamford Bridge but with Ashley Cole firmly cemented into the left back spot the 23 year old could be interested in a move for regular first team football.
Bertrand would provide Liverpool more competition for the left back with Rodgers’ believed to be unsure over the defensive capability of current incumbent Jose Enrique.
The club’s interest in Bertrand comes amid rumours Chelsea are set to step up their interest in Liverpool’s striker Luis Suarez.
The out-spoken Uruguayan has intimated that he would be interested in a move to London despite previous claims he wanted out of England although Chelsea, and all other potential suitors, will have to meet Liverpool’s valuation before any talks can take place.
The interest in Bertrand could however play in Jose Mourinho’s hand and should Liverpool firm up their interest a sensational multi-million pound swap deal could be mooted.
