Despite the return of the ‘happy one’ it’s not been the best of starts to the season for Chelsea as they have won just two leagues game so far, losing to Everton at Goodison Park in a game they dominated last time out not to mention losing on penalties to Bayern Munich in the Super cup final last month.
Samuel Eto’o and Andrea Schurrle could pay the price for their profligacy in front of goal at the weekend with Fernando Torres pushing for a start while Oscar and Frank Lampard are also pushing for recalls to the starting eleven after coming off the bench against Everton.
Juan Mata, who has yet to finish a game this season for the blues, made his second start of the season at the weekend and the Spaniard is hoping to help Chelsea get their Champions league campaign off to fast start.
“After one defeat you just want the next match to come as soon as possible, and probably the Champions League is the best way” Mata said on his personal blog.
“I really want to live a night like this at Stamford Bridge. It’s a different feeling, even more since we won the title two years ago. This competition brings great memories to all of us and makes us feel really excited.
“I’m looking forward to playing at home again and I hope we win so we can face the next Premier League game with a good taste.
“The next few weeks ahead are very intense: five games in just 14 days. In order to get ready for them it is very important to get confidence and to be positive.”
The two sides met at the semi-final stage of the Europa league last season with Chelsea emerging victorious, claiming a 5-2 aggregate win.
Basel currently sit third in the Swiss league three points behind leaders Young Boys and have won four and drawn one of their last five games.
Their goal scoring threat is likely to come from 32 year old Marco Streller who has 4 goals already this season with former Wolfsburg forward Giovanni Sio also a threat.
Basel, beat Maccabi Tel Aviv 4-3 on aggregate and Ludogorets 6-2 in the play-off round, won’t be an easy prospect for Chelsea and they made life difficult for Tottenham Hotspurs last season and famously beat Manchester United in the 2011/2012 Champion’s league group stages.
