Napoli are relative novices on this stage with this season’s campaign just their second ever however expectations are high in Naples however after a summer recruitment drive that saw the Edinson Cavani money invested wisely.
Jose Callejon, Gonzalo Higuain, Pepe Reina and Raul Albiol, Dries Mertens, Pablo Armero and Duvan Zapata were all bought in over the summer and the quartet has all settled into life with ease.
Dortmund, meanwhile, finished runners-up to domestic rivals Bayern Munich in the Champions League last season and have made a blistering start to the new season, claiming the German Super Cup as well as their maintaining a 100% start to the season.
With both sides in good form a thrilling encounter is expected however history and indeed their impressive current form make a winner hard to call.
Dortmund have a poor record against Serie A sides losing 14 from 27 matches while Napoli have not beaten a German team in any of their last seven fixtures, losing five times and drawing twice in the process. But Benitez’s side have proved a tricky prospect on their own turf winning 10 of the 12 homes game they have played in 2013.
Benitez is expected to start with the in-form Marek Hamsik in place of Giandomenico Mesto with Jose Callejon also pushing for a start.
Meanwhile Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp is set to hand Champions league debuts to on-song duo Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang however Sebastian Kehl is a slight doubt with an ankle injury.
The club will head into the game full of confidence after they hammered Hamburg 6-2 at the weekend and the result left Marco Reus feeling very upbeat about the team’s prospects.
Speaking to the Bundesliga’s official website Reus said: “We didn’t give up at 2-2 and demanded more of ourselves, now we focus on the Champions League.
“More intensity like that over a full 90 minutes and we’ll be difficult to beat. I’ve got my rhythm and confidence back. All I care about is football, I love it, and I love this team. Now on to Napoli.”
