Manuel Pellegrini and his Manchester City side take the field against Barcelona in the first leg of the knockout stages of the Champions League tonight, and with a place in the last 16 up for grabs there’s sure to be an electric atmosphere as two sides with an abundence of talent lock horns at the Etihad.
Its probably Pellegrini’s biggest game to date, as his Manchester City side go toe to toe with one of Europe’s most prestigious talents, Barcelona.
The Citizens will be hoping they can convert some of their domestic home form to the European stage, having demolished plenty of top quality sides at the Etihad this season.
The loss of star striker Sergio Aguero will have been a loss for all concerned with the Manchester club, as the Argentinian still struggles with a hamstring injury which has forced him out of City’s last three games.
Fernandinho is likely to be recalled to midfield, alongside David Silva, Yay Toure and flying winger Jesus Navas. French international Samir Nasri could find a starting place after returning from injury last week.
Up front, Eden Dzeko and Steven Jovetic will be fighting to play alongside Alvaro Negredo, who looks likely to lead the line in Aguero’s absence.
The good news for football fans is that Brazilian superstar Neymar could make an appearance, after returning to the Barcelona side which dismantled Rayo Vallecano 6-0 on the weeekend, as could Xavi, who was rested.
Lionel Messi of course, is set to to feature as the Argentinian looks back to his best form in recent months.
Predictably, Barcelona are favourites to win the tie at 6/4, while the those hoping for Manchester City to get off to the perfect start can back them at 2/1 to take the victory, with the stalemate available at 13/5.
The match kicks off tonight at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester at 19:45.
