Manchester United will hope to upset the odds when they take on current holders Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions league quarter-final clash at Old Trafford later today.

Both sides have experienced contrasting seasons to date with United, the reigning Premier League champions currently 7th in the table while Bayern has built on last season’s Bundesliga dominance to claim a second successive title.

While United have struggled under the guidance of new man David Moyes, Pep Guardiola has carried on the good work of Jupp Heynckes.

Bayern has proved an unstoppable force in German football this season and after their record breaking run that lead to a 24th league title, winger Arjen Robben is now tipping the club to transfer that dominance into the Europe under the guidance of former Barcelona man Guardiola.

“Guardiola has turned us into the most dominant team in Europe. We have made another giant step as a team this season,” Robben said.

“We are more dominant than we have been. From the very first minute we put massive pressure on our opponents and are capable of keeping the ball and putting them under pressure for the full 90 minutes.

“Guardiola is very demanding. He asks a lot from his players. Every day it is so intense, but I love that.

“Our playing style is even more attacking than last year. Then we used to play compact, and we let the other team come into our half sometimes, so we could hit them with the counter-attack.

“But this manager is tactically so strong. He is always pointing out where we can find the space to get one-on-one situations. He teaches us to make quick sprints and runs without the ball.”

Bayern will be favourites to seal their place in the semi-finals of the Champions league against a Manchester United side that has proved inconsistent this season in the Premier League.

However they have clicked in Europe and like Bayern they will head into the clash with just one defeat in European competition this season.

While much of the focus will be on the weaknesses that exist in the United team and have Bayern can exploit them, Red Devil manager David Moyes believes that Gaurdiola’s men have some weaknesses of their own, and he intends to exploit them.

“When we drew them, I felt we’d drawn probably the best team in Europe at this present time” the former Everton manager said.

“I think most people would agree with that…Munich are a little bit of a class above the other teams, including Borussia Dortmund.

“We have got a really tough game and know exactly what we are going to get but we’ll try to exploit little bits of weaknesses they have got.”

United will be without Robin Van Persie (knee), Chris Smalling (hamstring), Rafael da Silva (knock) and Antonio Valencia’s (knee) while Patrice Evra is suspended.

Bayern meanwhile will be without the suspended Dante.
