Southampton Portsmouth Team News Free Bets as Nigel Adkins looks to south coast derby

Southampton v Portsmouth Sat 13:00
Despite last weekend’s hiccup at Blackpool, Southampton remain at the summit of the nPower championship and will be hoping to condemn bitter rivals Portsmouth even further when they host the South Coast Derby on Saturday, as Bet365 offer long odds on Pompey surprising their arch rivals.

The clash will provide a showcase of two sides going in quite opposite directions with Southampton representing the ascension between the two while Portsmouth seem to be on a downward spiral.

The Saints have pushed on miraculously from their League One promotion and look deserved favourites to gain automatic promotion back to the English top flight.

Nigel Adkins’ side are currently the best attacking team in the Championship with an average of 2.10 goals scored when playing at home this season.

The league leaders are just as reliable at the back however, managing to keep a clean sheet in 50% of their games at St. Marys in the current campaign; a record they will be confident of maintaining on Saturday.

In their past ten outings, Pompey have netted just eight goals, including a 4-1 victory over Birmingham making for a relatively low threat on the Southampton defence.

Michael Appleton’s men have been poor in front of goal this term, failing to score in almost two thirds of their away games and would seem likely candidates to see the drop come season’s end.

These two sides ran out a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture in December but have both seen complete opposite seasons since then, with Southampton asserting themselves as the current power on the South Coast.

The duo are equal in terms of league victories over the past decade but Southampton will be disappointed if they don’t manage to take a leading hand in that statistic after this weekend’s meeting.
