The Blues finished third last season but after a summer spending spree that includes a number of big name captures Jose Mourinho’s men are the early favourites to wrestle the title away from Manchester City.
Diego Costa, Cesc and Filipe Luis have all arrived for a total outlay of over £73 million while Didier Drogba has return to the club on a free with Thibaut Courtois also back in the manager’s plans following a loan spell with Atletico Madrid.
Of those signed Costa, Luis and Cesc are in line to make their debuts on Monday with Drogba a doubt after sustaining an ankle injury during a pre-season friendly against Ferencvaros.
However despite the appearance of two big names, it is the decision over Courtois which is attracting the most interest. The Belgian stopper has impressed during his time in Spain and is tipped to be a big player for Chelsea in the coming years.
Whether that starts against Burnley remains to be seen however with Mourinho revealing the team don’t know whether Courtois or the veteran Petr Cech will start.
“I can’t tell you [which goalkeeper will play] because they don’t know and the team doesn’t know,” the Portuguese said in his pre-match press conference.
“What I can say is that in my opinion, with all respect to fantastic goalkeepers around the world, I think Chelsea has two of the three best goalkeepers in the world, which is unique.”
Burnley for their part are also set to hand out a couple of debuts with Lukas Jutkiewicz, a summer signing from Middlesbrough, Stephen Ward and Steven Reid all in contention.
Sean Dyche’s side surprised many last season as they secured promotion via a second place finish in the Championship, and they can hope they can continue those surprises this season starting against Chelsea.
Five years ago Burnley stunned the football world when they beat Manchester United in their opening match of the new Premier League season.
