Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly unlikely to add to his squad in the January transfer window, following their excellent start to the season.
Having seen the likes of Ashley Cole and David Luiz leave in the summer, Chelsea have just six defenders at the club who have played consistently in Europe’s elite leagues.
The head injury sustained to Kurt Zouma on Tuesday evening could see him miss out for the next few games, meaning the young duo of Nathan Ake and Andres Christensen could be among the substitutes.
Mourinho has previously stated that his younger players will feature more towards the end of the season, however whether he will feel confident of fielding the young defensive duo if called upon is yet to be seen.
The fact John Terry has featured more than he would have expected suggests that Mourinho isn’t certain about the pair.
Raphael Varane was consistently selected by Mourinho during his time at Real Madrid, however since Carlo Ancelotti’s appointment, the French defender has found himself out of the side.
It is well known that Mourinho is a huge fan of Varane and a move for the defender in January wouldn’t be a surprise.
When asked about the defender last season, Mourinho said: ‘I think he is the best young central defender in the world. Already I think he’s the best.’
Varane has been linked with Manchester United and surely Mourinho would prefer to see his former player in his squad, rather than that of a rival.
