Defending champion, top seed and punters pal Phil Taylor takes on fellow Englishman Michael Smith while five-time world champ Raymond van Barneveld is up against the dangerous Jamie Caven.

Taylor is an unbackable 1/33 shot to progress into the third round but he’ll need to be sharper than he was when looking in trouble early on against Rob Szabo in the first round.

The Power came through eventually 3-1 but he never looked comfortable against the qualifier and Smith, who is 16/1 for the upset, will take heart from that as he bids to write his name into darting folklore.

‘Bully Boy’ was also well below his best when beating qualifier Morihiro Hashimoto, but has a strong make-up for the big occasions having won the PDC World Youth Championship earlier this year. Smith is a confident young player and looks good value to achieve what Szabo did and nick a set off the even money ante post favourite.

The correct score of 4-1 to Taylor at 5/2 looks well worth chancing.

The Barney Army will be out in force for his match with Caven, who knocked out another Dutch thrower Jelle Klaasen in the opening week.

Van Barneveld looked very cool, calm and collected when disposing of Jamie Lewis 3-0 in his opener and his followers may see the 2/7 for a victory as a bit of an early Christmas present. Caven can be backed at 11/4 and that price does look very short.

A bet to consider in the correct score market has to be the price of 4/1 for RVB to win 4-0.

When the big Dutchman gets into a rhythm, he’s very hard to stop and Caven could be in for a bit of a pasting.

The opening match is between 16th seed Peter Wright and Dane Per Laursen, who defeated Terry Jenkins in round one after the ‘Raging Bull’ hit an incredible nine-darter.

However, ‘Snakebite’ Wright, who has been playing great darts this season, posted and average of 98.68 in his first round clash – the highest any player has achieved in the tournament so far.

This looks another great chance to back the whitewash at a juicy price.

Wright is playing the best darts of his life and can win 4-0 at 5/2.
