Porto warmed up for the clash with a 4-1 victory over relegation threatened Arouca. The win moved the club to within two points of Sporting Lisbon and leaves then 9 points behind leaders Benfica.

The game was Luis Castro’s first game as temporary coach following the departure of Paulo Fonseca and the former B coach got off to a strong start thanks to goals from the in-form Ricardo Quaresma (2), a 15th of the season from Jackson Martinez and Carlos Eduardo.

Quaresma has caught the eye since moving back to Portugal in January and his strikes at the weekend were his 7th in 13 games, his form making a mockery of those who refused to take a chance on him after seven months without a club.

With just 8 games left in the Portugal domestic season, the gap at the top could be too big for Castro to reduce leaving the Europa league as a viable option for a trophy, however despite that the new man in charge was not looking too far into the future.

“We will count our points in the end; we always look at one game at a time and that is what I try to tell the players,” he said.

“We can only play one game and in the end we will see.”

His Napoli counterpart Rafa Benitez is a more established name than Castro but the Spanish coach has spent the last few days playing very much a political game with flowers for a woman journalist on International Women’s day, talk of a 10 year plan for the club and an insistence that he would not diverge from his play philosophy.

Napoli, already through to the final of the Coppa Italia, will hope to add European honours to their list via the Europa league, a trophy Benitez lifted with Chelsea last year.

The Naples outfit are out of contention in the League sitting 17 points behind leaders Juventus with 11 games to go.

The club warmed up for the European clash with an impressive 1-0 win over Roma at the weekend with Jose Callejon late goal moving Napoli to within 3 points of Rudi Garcia’s second place side.
