To do that they will have to improve of their record of 8 defeats in 13 trips to Italy.

The club are currently being managed, on a temporary basis, by Luis Castro who oversaw the club’s fifth league defeat of the season at the weekend in a 1-0 to rivals Sporting Lisbon.

While Castro is inexperienced at this level, his rival in the opposition dugout, Rafa Benitez, is aiming to become the first manager to win back to back Europa Leagues.

The former Valencia manager led Chelsea to success last year and speaking ahead of the tie, Napoli manager Rafa Benitez described the clash with the former European cup winners as being “like a final”

“We reach this game (against Porto) with confidence, because we won a difficult test (against Torino),” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“We need to get everyone fit again and hope we are fresh for a match that will be like a final.”

Benitez will be without Juan Camilo Zuniga (knee) and Rafael Cabral (knee) for the game while Christian Maggio is also set to be on the side-lines.

One man who could be key for Napoli on Thursday is Slovakian midfielder Marek Hamsik.

The 26 year old has endured a tricky campaign this season but Benitez believes that the player was back to his best in the 1-0 win over Torino at the weekend.

“He did much better, as he helped out the team in attack and defence. I never thought of bringing him into a deeper role, as he is so good at the final ball and those runs forward” he added.

“I said that I had faith in him and he replied with a good performance. I think he needs to have freedom to do what he wants on the field.”

Porto meanwhile will be without Goalkeeper Helton (Achilles) while Alex Sandro is suspended.
