The summer transfer activity to date would appear to back up those claims with Matthew Upson and Leonardo Ulloa the two most high profile captures.

Both have arrived from Brighton and while the experience of Upson, set to miss out this weekend, will be crucial it will be goals of Ulloa that will ultimately help their chances of staying up. The Argentine striker scored 16 goals last season and move to the midlands in a £8 million deal.

Ulloa will hope to form a strong partnership with David Nugent. The one-time England cap has looked sharp in pre-season and he will be full of confidence after his 20 goal haul last season.

Now 29, Nugent was heralded as one of England’s great hopes when he burst on the scene at Portsmouth but after failing to make the grade the last time out in the Premier League he will be hoping for more luck this time round.

“It didn’t happen for me at Portsmouth, maybe it wasn’t the right club for me,” Nugent told The Independent.

“But everybody makes mistakes in life and I’m fitter, stronger, older, wiser and I’m ready for the Premier League this season.

“I have unfinished business. I think people still believe I’m not good enough for the Premier League but I’m going to prove them wrong.”

Everton meanwhile had a stunning campaign last time out, finishing 5th in the table. The club have stuck rather twisted this summer with Romelu Lukaku and Gareth Barry so impressive last season making their moves permanent.

Bosnia’s world cup star Mudamed Besic also joined the club and he could make his debut on Saturday. Darron Gibson is also in contention feature after recovering from injury last season however Bryan Oviedo is out.

Kevin Mirallas, Christian Astu, Lukaku and hamstring victim Seamus Coleman are all rated as doubtful for the game while Arouna Kone is definitely out.
