Greece secured their place in the knock-out stages by virtue of a final day, last minute win over the Ivory Coast.

The European’s failed to impress in their opening two games, losing 3-0 to Colombia before drawing 0-0 with Japan. However they turned up when needed with Georgios Samaras’ last-gasp penalty secured Greece’s place in the last 16 at the expense of the African’s.

Costa Rica meanwhile were the surprises team of the opening stages stunning both Uruguay and Italy with 3-1 and 1-0 wins respectively before sealing top spot in the group with a 0-0 draw with England in their final game.

Having kept clean sheets against both the Italians and the English, the Costa Rican’s defensive displays have impressed at the tournament and defender Cristian Gamboa insists that his team-mates won’t change their approach.

“You can expect from us for the next game, the same that we have done until now,” Gamboa said.

“When we came, and got the results, we were the surprise of the World Cup, now we are not. Now people see Costa Rica like a favourite, and now we have to continue demonstrating the level that we showed in the group stage.

“We have to play a good game, to be intelligent.

“We have studied Greece, so I believe that we are going to play a good match. We have to be the ones with purpose, try to get the result and still going on writing another page of history.

“We are happy but we want more.”

Costa Rica has now new injury worries ahead of the game while Greece are sweating on the fitness of keeper Orestis Karnezis and midfielder Panagiotis Kone with the pair struggling to be fit with Captain Kostas Katsouranis is back after sitting out the last match due to a suspension
