Messi pens new deal along with Xavi and Puyol

Anybody thinking that their club had the chance of signing the best player on the planet right now has been dealt a massive blow, as Lionel Messi has agreed a new deal with Barcelona that will keep him at the Nou Camp until 2018.

When a player signs a contract these days, you don’t usually read much into it as they do not often see it out. It seems to be a different case for Messi though and is a massive statement to show just how much Barca means to him and that he never really wants to leave.

Some argue that Messi should come and play in the Premier League to really prove himself, but why would he? He is at arguably the best club in the world that challenge for major trophies each year, is adored by the fans and has been with the Catalan side since he was 13-years-old. Barcelona is in the Argentinean’s blood.

What he can achieve with the Spanish giants is almost frightening. He can go on to break every goal-scoring record in the game and still has one game in 2012 left to add to his tally of 90 already in the year.

Barcelona were clearly delighted to extend his contract, along with Xavi and Carles Puyol, who were both products of the club’s academy.

“In the coming weeks Puyol, Xavi and Messi will sign their respective new contracts. This news means that FC Barcelona has secured its ties with three of its most important players.” The club confirmed.

At the moment, they are quite simply too good for the rest of La Liga and lead by a massive nine points with just one game to go before a winter break. They have dropped just two points in the Spanish top flight all season, have made it comfortably through to the knockout stages of the Champions League and are still in the Copa del Rey.

With someone like Messi in the side, there is no limit to what Tito Vilanova’s men can do this season and his contract extension will give everyone involved in the club.

It would be interesting to see how he coped in the Premier League, but it is not something we are ever likely to see, especially when he is in his peak.

Watch him whenever you get the chance, because Lionel Messi is one of the greatest talents the game has ever seen.
