Liverpool are preparing for life after Luis Suarez with reports from Italy claiming the club have made enquired about the availability of Juventus striker Alessandro Matri.
Suarez’s days on Merseyside appear to be numbered Liverpool with Arsenal and Real Madrid in a straight fight for his services and while the club won’t let the player leave until their asking price has been met it would appear that behind the scenes moves are afloat to bring in a replacement.
With Arsenal believed to be readying an improved offer in excess of the £35 million they reportedly offered earlier in the week Liverpool are working on their contingency plan with Sky Italia claiming that the Uruguayan’s replacement could be Matri.
Representatives from Liverpool are believed to have contacted Juventus to learn if they would be willing to part with the 28 year old.
With Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez both joining the club during the summer and Mirko Vucinic, Sebastian Giovinco and Fabio Quagliarella already on the books Juventus would appear to have a number of options up front and could cash in on the former Cagliari striker.
Despite scoring 10 goals in 32 games last season, including 2 in the Champions league, Matri is not longer guaranteed a place in the starting line up or the match day squad for that matter and could be tempted by a move the Anfield.
The 6ft striker has plenty of pedigree having won two Italian titles and played Champions league football since moving to Juventus in a €15.5 million deal in 2011.
Matri, who started his career with Milan before moving to Cagliari, has five caps with the Italian national side but was not part of the Confederations cup squad.
While Matri would be a good addition to the squad for Liverpool he does not appear to have the same goal scoring ratio as Suarez with his 13 goals in the 2009/2010 season his best return to date.
A return to Milan has also been mooted in the Italian press as had a swap deal with Fiorentina for Stevan Jovetic although with Manchester City believed to closing in on the 23 year old that seems unlikely.
Either way its seem Matri days in Turin are drawing to a close although interestingly news of the Brendan Rodgers interest comes days after it was reported that Merseyside rivals Everton had baulked at the £12 million price tag the Serie A outfit had placed on the player.
