According to reports in Spain, Liverpool are closing in on the capture of Valencia left back Aly Cissokho.
The 25 year old looks set to move to Merseyside on a season long loan deal with the option to sign the player permanently at the end of the season.
Liverpool have reportedly agreed to pay £900k to secure the player’s signature and should Cissokho impress in the Premier League next season then the Reds will pay their Spanish counterparts an additional £3.5 million.
Rumours of the deal followed hotly on the heels confirmation from Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers that the club were looking at bringing in another left back.
Speaking at press conference from Melbourne where the club are currently on tour Rodgers said: “There are obviously certain areas of the squad where we’re a bit thinner than others.
“We probably need a bit more support – that extra bit of quality – at the top end of the field and that’s something we’ll look out for.
“That’ll be mixed with needing cover in the left-back position – that’s something we’re looking at. It’s not really about numbers, it’s about quality.
“If we can do that over the next number of weeks we’ll be happy.”
Cissokho has previously been linked with the Reds while Sunderland, Spurs and cross-town rivals Everton are also interested in the former Porto star.
The defender only joined Valencia last season from Ligue 1 side Lyon for a fee in the region of €7 million, but he struggled to replicate the form that saw him move to France for a reported €15 million in 2009. The French International with one cap to his name so far made 30 starts in all competitions last season including 7 starts in the Champions League and 18 in La Liga managing 2 goals and 2 assists
Talks of a potential move comes days after the player denied a move to Anfield was edging closer with Cissokho telling Sky Sports “I will not believe that I am going anywhere until I am in Liverpool and having a medical,”
“Liverpool is such a great club, so to be linked with them is fantastic. But there is nothing concrete from anyone at the moment.
“If there is an opportunity to join such a club, I will take it. Valencia are a great club, in a great city, but Liverpool are a legendary club.”
Cissokho would become the latest Spanish based player to join Liverpool following in the footsteps of Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas.
