Liverpool are set for another transfer battle with reports emerging that Barcelona have launched a £15 million bid to sign Daniel Agger.
Following on from transfer saga that has become the Luis Suarez affair another sub plot now looks set to develop with new Barca boss Gerado Martinez making Agger his number target to shore up his back-line.
The La Liga side are on the lookout for a new central defender and have made the Danish star as well as Chelsea’s David Luiz their number one targets.
However with Chelsea believed to be looking for close to £40 million for the 26-year-old Luiz Barcelona are ready to focus their sole attention on Agger who they believe would cost far less.
Liverpool have already sold Pepe Reina and lost Jaime Carragher to retirement this summer and loathe to lose another senior member of their defensive unit but their resolve is expected to be tested in the coming days.
News of the bid comes just hours after Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers revealed that he expected Daniel Agger to be at the club at the end of the transfer window.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Valerenga Rodgers told a Norwegian press conference “This is all about loyalty,”
“He’s obviously a world-class defender. Daniel is very committed to Liverpool; he’s one of the players that have really impressed me.
“If we’re talking about loyalty, he was one of the first players that I spoke to when I became the manager. At the time, there were a number of big clubs looking to sign Daniel.
“But he gave me his word that for as long as I wanted him to be at Liverpool, he would be at Liverpool. He has never swayed from that.
“He has an unswerving commitment to Liverpool which is so refreshing. His loyalty to the club is incredible.
“I would suspect when he signed his new contract last year, he was hoping that this would be the contract that’s going to allow him to see out the best part of his career at Liverpool.”
However that loyalty looks set to be tested with reports suggesting that Liverpool will do business with the Catalan side for a figure closer to £25 million.
News of Barcelona’s bid for Agger could have an impact for Serie A side Napoli with Rodgers unlikely to let Martin Skrtel leave should the 28 year old move to Spain.
