Liverpool are set to receive a welcome boost when they welcome back controversial striker Luis Suarez to the squad for the league cup clash with Manchester United on Wednesday.

The 26 year old sat out the final game of his 10-match ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during the 1-0 defeat to Southampton at Anfield on Saturday and is set to feature against the David Moyes men on Wednesday.

With Philippe Coutinho out injured with a shoulder injury and Iago Aspas struggling to adapt to the Premier League Brendan Rodgers will be glad to have Suarez, scorer of four goals in five League Cup appearances, back to ease the burden on Daniel Sturridge.

Daniel Agger will be assessed before the game but is more than likely set to miss out after revealing that his rib injury affected him at the weekend. Thiago Llori and Luis Alberto could both feature, as too could Martin Kelly and Jordan Ibe as Rodgers shuffles his pack ever so slightly while Glen Johnson, Joe Allen and Aly Cissokho are all out.

United meanwhile will hope that Robin Van Persie is fit to take his place in the squad.

It’s unlikely that David Moyes will risk the Dutchman from the start after he missed the clash with Manchester City due to a groin injury but with confidence likely to be low following the 4-1 defeat to their neighbours the Scot would like to have the mercurial forward on the bench should he be required.

That said with United involved in Europe and tipped to be amongst the challengers for the title, the league cup won’t be a priority for Moyes and its likely that Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand will be rested.

United were second best in the loss to City, however despite a second heavy defeat in two years against their cross-city rivals Wayne Rooney has backed his side to bounce back.

“It is a bad day for us but we have another big game against Liverpool on Wednesday. We will forget about this now and try to move on in that one. It is the ideal game. Any game against Liverpool is a big game, whether it is a friendly or Capital One Cup or Premier League. It is still massive,” said the England striker.

United’s only doubts, Van Persie aside, are Phil Jones and Rafael.

The two teams last met in this competition in the 2003 final when goals from Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen helped Liverpool claim the cup and in four meeting in the competition the Reds have claimed three successes to United’s one win.
