The Reds are top of the Christmas tree for the first time since the 2008/2009 season, the season they last finished runners-up, and with each of the last four winners topping the table on the 25th December Liverpool fans have plenty of reasons to be cheerful.

However Manuel Pellegrini’s side are hitting form at the right time with their 4-2 success over Fulham last time out their fourth win on the trot and given their strong home form they will start as favourites.

Despite the absence of top scorer Sergio Aguero City has continued to score at will, rattling in seven goals in the two games the Argentine forward has missed.

That coupled with the fact that City have scored 35 goals in front of their home fans almost guarantees that this fixture will not end goal less.

Record breaker Luis Suarez will be key to any Liverpool success at the Etihad. The Uruguay forward has scored 10 goals in the month of December so far, becoming the first player to do and with 19 goals so far this season is the form player in English football.

Suarez’ form has also aided by that of his team-mates with Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling filling the void left by Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge.

Henderson took his assist tally to 5 with two assists for Suarez in the 3-1 win over Cardiff, a game that saw Sterling score his third goal in four games.

The win over Cardiff was the Reds fourth on the trot, a run that has seen them score 17 goals and conceded just 3.

In addition to being without Gerrard and Sturridge Liverpool will also be without Jose Enrique and Sebastian Coates while City, who will start with Joe Hart in goal, are also without Matija Nastastic and Stevan Jovetic.
