Stoke will bid to add Liverpool to the list of big clubs that has struggled at the Britannia Stadium when they face the Champions league hopefuls on Sunday.

Mark Hughes side have already taken points off Manchester City, Everton and Chelsea this season and after their narrow defeat at Anfield on the opening day of the season they will fancy their chances of another upset.

The club are currently in a period of transition under Hughes but with over half of the season gone they sit comfortably in mid-table on 22 points, one point and two places off 10th place Hull.

Liverpool meanwhile reclaimed their top four spot with a 2-0 win over Hull City last time out and they made it two from two in 2014 with a win over Oldham in the FA Cup last weekend.

It was a mixed week for the Reds with Luis Suarez rewarded for his stunning form in December, claiming the player of the month award while manager Brendan Rodgers was fined £8,000 for comments he made about the officials in the wake of the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City.

Neither will have impacted on the club’s preparations for the game with the absence of Daniel Agger more of a concern for the former Swansea manager.

Agger is set to miss a month of action after injuring his calf in the cup win over Oldham however his loss is set to be offset by the return of Mamadou Sakho following a hamstring injury.

Daniel Sturridge is also set to hand the Reds, with just one win in their last seven away games, a welcome boost as he returns following an ankle injury however Joe Allen, Jon Flanagan, Jose Enrique and Sebastian Coates are all out.

Stoke have some worries of their own with Asmir Begovic and back-up Thomas Sorensen both out with a broken figure and calf problem respectively. Their absence hands a chance to the highly rated Jack Butland.

Robert Huth will be assessed before the game as he continues to struggle with a knee injury while Oussama Assaidi is ineligible for the game.

Good news for Potters comes in the shape of a return to action for Stephen Ireland.

The Irish man, set to make his loan move to the Britannia permanent this month with Villa believe to be willing to release the player early from the final 6 months of his contract, has not played since the 3-0 loss to Spurs.
