The result kept the club four points off leaders Chelsea and they will hope to can keep pace with the chasing pack when they travel to the South coast.

There will be an element of revenge on the cards for Brendan Rodgers and his men especially as the Saints are the only club to take all three points on a visit to Anfield this season.

Since that game only Arsenal have managed to keep the Reds forward line blank and with Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suarez, Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson in the form of their lives Liverpool will hopeful of extending that run.

Rodgers looks set to be boosted ahead of the game with Mamadou Sakho in line to return after recovering from a hamstring injury sustained in the 2-1 loss to Chelsea in December. Defensive midfielder Lucas is also back in training but won’t feature while Jose Enrique remains sidelined.

Southampton meanwhile are sweating on the fitness on Jos Hooiveld who is struggling with an eye injury while left back Luke Shaw will be keen to celebrate his call up to the England squad with a strong performance.

The 18 year old was named in Roy Hodgson’s squad for the friendly with Denmark, marking an incredible rise up the ranks that began with his Premier League debut in November 2012.

Shaw’s reputation has been on the rise since and he faces a tricky afternoon on Saturday against Liverpool’s interchanging forward line.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side had been in good form before last weekend’s surprise 3-1 defeat to West Ham United.

With Manchester City not in action due to their involvement in the Capital One Cup Final with Sunderland, the Reds could move up to third on Saturday or even second depending on results elsewhere.

However in order to do the Reds will overcome their poor recent record at St. Marys which has seen them lose four of their last five games.
