An opening win over Ludogorets followed by a disappoint defeat away to Basle have left Brendan Rodgers side third in the group, with their head to head record against the Swiss champions pushing them into the Europa league spots.

The Reds have proved somewhat frustrating to watch this season with their failure to replicate last season’s form leading to inconsistent displays. Sunday’s win over QPR was only their fourth of the season, and it owed much too bad luck then a return to their pressing play.

Liverpool v Real Madrid – Reds face tough battle at Anfield

Given their struggles this season Liverpool will face a difficult test on Wednesday, especially with Real heading to Merseyside on a run of seven straight wins and back to back 5-0 successes, something the Northern Ireland manager is all too aware of.

“Right now Madrid are a team with a level of performance I haven’t seen in years,” he told AS.

“They have it all. Great experience, great players, speed, individual technique. It’s a fantastic squad with a wonderful coach in Carlo Ancelotti, a nice guy who also knows how to improve players.

“When there’s an open field there’s no one better than Madrid in the world at counter-attacks. Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale could be in the Olympics with their speed over 100 metres.”

While Rodgers will have to deal with an-inform Ronaldo, he won’t have to face Gareth Bale as the Welsh man is ruled out.

However with James, Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Luca Modric in their ranks, Real have no shortage of quality.

Liverpool for their part have plenty of quality, however with Daniel Sturridge out injured and Mario Balotelli struggling for form the Reds will be hoping that Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho, so effective against QPR can make the step up.
