The 37 year old was a FA Cup winner with Liverpool in 2001 but will be out to stop the club winning a trophy that manager Brendan Rodgers has earmarked as a top priority.

Speaking ahead of his return, Heskey said “It’s a wonderful thing to go back

“I’m 37, I’m not a young lad; to go back and play at Anfield is a great thing. It wasn’t long ago, a few months ago, when I was doing LFCTV so to actually be going back there and putting my boots on and playing against Liverpool is wonderful.

“I’ve thought about it. The fans were wonderful to me while I was there. I’ll hopefully get a good reception and play my heart out.”

Heskey is set to be partnered upfront by another wise old head in the shape of Eidur Gudjohnson with Craig Davies ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Manager Neil Lennon is unlikely to make too many changes from the side that beat Sheffield Wednesday last time out although Kevin McNaughton, Mark Davies and Joe Mason could feature. Max Clayton remains sidelined however.

Liverpool meanwhile will hand a start to Adam Lallana after the midfielder made his return to action following an ankle problem midweek. The England star is likely to start alongside Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho up front.

Daniel Sturridge is back training but unlikely to feature while Brad Jones, Kolo Toure and Jordan Ibe will be missing due to injury, African Nations duty and ineligibility.

The Reds will be confidence of progressing, having won their last 9 home matches against Bolton in all competitions.
