Liverpool to mount bid for Charlton defender Joe Gomez

With reports claiming that Sunderland are closing in on a move for Uruguay international Sebastian Coates, Liverpool are set to sign a younger replacement in the shape of Charlton defender, Joe Gomez as Brendan Rodgers looks to rebuild a team that fared so miserably last season and failed to seal a place in the top four.

The Irishman is keen on signing a quality defender for next season and after Denmark international Simon Kjaer said no to a move to Anfield, has turned his attention to Gomez who is seen as a really good long term option for the Reds.

Liverpool are likely to pay an initial 3.5 million pounds for the youngster but the transfer fee could rise to 9 million pounds in the future if the player really develops into an integral member of the team.

The move will also pave way for the transfer of Coates whose career has come to a stationary phase in the past few years.
