Fresh from making their fourth signing of the summer Liverpool are set to continue their spending spree with a move for Dutch winger Eljero Elia.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been extremely busy in the transfer window thus far with Simon Mignolet joining Kolo Toure, Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas as new players in the squad.
However the club are refusing to rest on their laurels and have now set their sights on Elia.
The 26 year old, who began his career with Den Haag and FC Twente, has been a long term target for the Reds and the club could be set to get their man at the third time of asking.
The player really rose to prominence on the back of a move to German side Hamburg in 2009 with his form for the Bundesliga side led to a host of interest from club’s across Europe.
Liverpool was first linked with the player in the summer of 2011 but was beaten to his signature by Juventus however the 27 times capped Dutch international struggled to make an impact in Italy and was soon on the move again.
Despite Liverpool again being linked, this time with a loan move, Elia returned to Germany to join Werder Bremen.
After the disappointment of his time in Turin during when he found game time hard to come across the move to Germany saw more regular playing time with Elia making 27 appearances in total scoring 1 goal.
However the player did not make the impact expected and was believed to be unhappy with the style of play, the defensive set up hampering his attacking instincts. The season ended in disappointment for Elia when he, along with team mate Marko Arnautovic, was banned by club for being caught speeding on the road.
That has led to speculation he could move on again in the summer and despite his recent struggles for regular game time Elia remains on Liverpool’s radar with Rodgers the latest Liverpool manager to show an interest in the speedy winger.
Rodgers is keen to add pace to the Liverpool wide areas and see Elia as the next piece in his Anfield jigsaw and is ready to offer €5 million for the winger.
Russian side Spartak Moscow and Greek side PAOK Saloniki have also been credited with an interest in the player although Bremen have been quick to play down reports that the player is set to move on.
