Fulham in for Coates as Liverpool target Marquee signings

Fulham are ready to offer Sebastian Coates an escape route from his Anfield nightmare.

The 22 year old appears to be on his way of out Anfield after failing to make an impression on Reds boss Brendan Rodgers.

The Uruguayan defender arrived from Nacional 18 months ago with a reputation as one of South American’s brightest defenders but he has struggled to make an impact not to mention secure a regular run in the side.

A stunning bicycle kick against QPR aside, Coates has looked out of his depth in a Liverpool shirt and despite the retirement of Jaime Carragher and doubts over the future of Martin Skrtel Rodgers is ready to ship the tall centre back out.

Fulham have recently been linked with a season-long loan deal for Andre Wisdom but with the English youngster set to drop down to the Championship for a guaranteed starting berth the Londoners have now switched their sights to Coates.

Martin Jol is keen on the 12 times capped full international and is ready to offer £5 million to snap him up.

Coates looks set to become the latest player to leave Anfield following in the footsteps of Andy Carroll and Jonjo Shelvey while Jay Spearing is also nearing the exit door.

Rodgers has been busy this summer completing deals for Simon Mignolet, Iago Aspas, Kolo Toure and Luis Alberto and the Northern Irishman has revealed he is not finished yet.

However while the quartet look set for exciting Anfield careers the former Swansea manager is now eyeing up marquee signings to bolster his starting eleven and while headlines continue to surround the future of Luis Suarez, Rodgers confirmed that there is work going on behind the scenes to bring in players ready for the first team.

“Our recruitment team are doing a great job behind the scenes in compiling lists of players that we can afford and might be available for us,” said Rodgers.

“What we’ve done in the early part of the summer is to improve the squad. That’s something I feel we’ve done with the players we’ve brought in.

“Now what’s important over the next three to five weeks is improving the team. That’s something the club is working very hard at.

“I’m sure by the time the end of August comes we’ll be ready and we’ll have a terrific squad ready to challenge.”
